What is Scouting

What is Cub Scouting?
Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped younger boys through Cub Scouting.  Cub Scouting is a year round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade.  Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to influcence the character and encourage spiritual growth, help boys develop habits and attitudes of good citizenship, encourage good sportsmanship and pride in growing strong in mind and body, and improve their understanding within the family.  Additionally, the program helps the boys to develop their ability to get along with other boys and respect other people, foster a new sense of personal achievement by helping boys develop new interests and skills, show boys how to be helpful and do their best, and to provide them with new and exciting things to do.  Finally, Cub Scouts helps prepare young boys to become Boy Scouts.

Boys will participate in a wide variety of den and pack activties.  These include games, projects, skits, songs, outdoor activities and trips.  There is also the Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program, which includes individual acheivement and family involvement recognition.

What is Boy Scouting?
Since 1910, it has been the mission of the Boy Scouts of America to prepare young men to make ethical choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.  Boy Scouting works toward three aims.  One is growth in moral strength and character.  This is defined by what the boy is - his personal qualities, his values, and his outlook.  The second aim is participating citizenship.  Used broadly, citizenship means the boy's relation to others.  He comes to learn of his obligation to other people, to the society he lives in, and to the government that presides over that society.  The third aim is development of physical, mental, and emotional fitness.  The Boy Scout program is designed for boys who have either completed the Arrow of Light or the 5th grade, to the age of 18.

Boys will participate in a variety of patrol and troop activities that include camping, games, service projects, and community service.  Additionally, Scouts participate in opportunities that assist in developing leadership abilities, personal acheivement through rank advancement, and fostering personal responsibility.

What is Venturing?
Venturing is the newest program offered by the Boy Scouts of America.  Unlike the Cub and Boy Scout programs, Venturing is a co-educational program that, through positive adult relationships and interaction, promotes positive character development, citizenship, leadership skills, and personal and mental fitness.  The purpose of Venturing is the same as those in the other phases of the Boy Scouts of America program.  It is specifically designed for young men and women between the ages of 14 through 20 years of age.

To achieve the mission and purpose of Venturing, the program is designed to meet the developmental needs of young adults by bringing them into voluntary association with responsible adults that act as avisors to the youth-led program.  Venturing is a sharing experience as responsible adults provide an environment whereby the developmental needs of the youth are met.  Crew program design, planning, ad implementation are structured around six critical experience areas:  social interaction, leadership development, personal fitness and development, service to others, citizenship, and a strong outdoor program.

What is Exploring?
Exploring is part of the Learning for Life career education program for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) or 15 through 20 years old.
Exploring's purpose is to provide experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Explorers are ready to investigate the meaning of interdependence in their personal relationships and communities. Exploring is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth and the organizations in their communities. Local community organizations initiate an Explorer post by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program of activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow, and develop those interests while exploring a potential career path.

Explorer posts can specialize in a variety of career skills. Exploring programs are based on five areas of emphasis: career opportunities, life skills, service learning, character education, and leadership experience. It shares a similarity with Venturing in that the program is designed to meet the developmental needs of young adults by bringing them into voluntary association with responsible adults that act as avisors to the youth-led program.  Venturing is a sharing experience as responsible adults provide an environment whereby the developmental needs of the youth are met.
